On behalf of Herbert Kannegiesser GmbH – a global leader in laundry technology – DB Schenker moved a cutting-edge laundry facility from Minden, Germany to the Russian Black Sea city of Sochi. The facility, valued at approximately ten million euros, will be used during the Winter Olympics in February 2014.
For this project, the events specialists were cooperating closely with the rail logistics experts at DB SCHENKER railog, the experts in rail lo-gistics from TRANSA Spedition GmbH and OOO Railion Russija Services, both of which are DB Schenker companies. Within a few weeks, the latter organized the precise rail transport of 42 40-foot high-cube containers to the construct-ion site in Sochi. These containers, all carrying delicate technology, were assembled at Minden train station and sent as a block train to the border of Poland and Belarus. Once the containers cleared the border, they were transferred to broad-gauge cars in Brest, Belarus. In addition, several continuous batch washers and wash presses over 13 meters long were transported to Brest by truck. They were unloaded in Brest and consolidated into a special train with the containers. A security force accompanied the special train to ensure there were no problems during transport. Belarusian Rail-.Fways (BC) and Russian Railways (RZD) also gave high priority to the Kanne-giesser train. RZD’s transport control center in Moscow monitored the transport with the exact timetable and short transit times. In Sochi, Kannegiesser’s project managers could count on multilingual specialists from DB SCHENKERsportsevents to answer all logistics questions related to this large-scale task. “As logistics experts, athletic mega-events are a welcome challenge for us. Our specialists start work long before the actual event takes place, making sure that everything is in place for the opening ceremony – down to every last washing machine,” explained Christian Schultze, Head of DB SCHENKERsportsevents, Schenker Deutschland AG.
