DB Schenker making good on Malcolm Logistics contract

DB Schenker Rail UK and Malcolm Logistics are celebrating an excellent first year of working together, which has seen more than 13,000 containers moved in the service over the last 12 months.

In April 2014 DB Schenker Rail UK won the major three-year contract with Malcolm Logistics to provide intermodal trains between Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) and Mossend Terminal.

The company secured the contract after devising a schedule that enabled a single train to complete the round trip in just 24 hours. Previously, two trains had to be used on the route, one in each direction, to maintain the strict delivery schedule demanded by the contract.

The streamlined service introduced by the company has already shown excellent results with a rapid transit time of only 6.5 hours from Daventry to Mossend. This has allowed DB Schenker to exceed service levels of time on arrival and move the first ever 50’ containers on the service.

DB Schenker, which is the UK’s leading rail freight operator, also provided extra train wagons to satisfy periods of high customer demand at Malcolm Logistics.

In September 2014 the Daventry to Grangemouth service was added to the contract, which runs seven days a week.

Malcolm Logistics offers services across the UK and has built up its multi-faceted, blue chip customer base over a long period. The containers carried under this contract hold goods for major retailers and manufacturers and form links with mainland Europe.

Adrian Fleming, Head of Intermodal at DB Schenker Rail UK, said: “We have enjoyed a very successful year with Malcolm Logistics and look forward to the continuation of the contract.

“The first train, which moved the initial 50’ containers, departed a few minutes early and we are delighted that we have been able to continue to exceed on our levels of service ever since. This highlights the strong working relationship that has been formed with Malcolm Logistics and is a credit to all those involved in the collaboration.”

David Turner, Director of Rail at Malcolm Logistics, said: “Over the last 12 months DB Schenker Rail UK have delivered the goods for our domestic intermodal freight flows. By working together we have jointly achieved the required arrival and departure punctuality and reliability demanded by our customers. The flexibility to support the demands of our customer base has allowed us to deliver the highest level of service.

“Our business is built on practical solutions and successful partnerships, and I am pleased that our relationship with DB Schenker already embraces this ethos.”
