DB SCHENKER’s Acquisition of USA Truck Boosts North America Cross-Border Operations

In September 2022, we announced the successful culmination of our acquisition of USA Truck, a leading capacity solutions provider with approximately 2,000 trucks and partnerships with more than 36,000 active contract carriers. That announcement was met with great excitement from media members, customers, and the DB SCHENKER team because we instantly grew our North American operations in terms of both market share and geographical footprint.

The acquisition strengthened many aspects of our business, including our cross-border services and technology offerings in Canada and Mexico. We built upon our Land Transport’s existing U.S. and Mexico freight network, further advancing the shared vision to become the premier North American transportation solutions provider.

“The acquisition of USAT was a perfect fit for DB SCHENKER in our ambition to be the premier North American capacity solutions provider,” said Joe Jaska, DB SCHENKER EVP, Land Transport, Region Americas. “Historically, USA Truck did very little Canada cross-border, but DB SCHENKER had a very strong presence in Canada thanks to relationships with 3rd party carriers. Combining those forces gives DB SCHENKER customers a true end-to-end solution on USA/Canada cross-border.”

When the acquisition was finalized, Jaska stated, “As a combined company, we remain focused on our shared growth vision and look forward to building upon U.S. Land Transport’s existing operations as our platform for growth in North America. We expect that customers will benefit from our comprehensive and strengthened global logistics expertise, including complementary international resources, air transport services, and ocean gateways.”

Nearly four decades of Land Transport experience servicing North America has allowed us to expand our presence to Mexico and Canada, thanks to excellent relationships with many partner carriers. DB SCHENKER coordinates transportation across the continent with our vast carrier network, including service to major industrial areas.

Our cross-border solutions include:

  • Customs Brokerage
  • Bilingual Sales and operations support.
  • Cross docking/transloading operations.
  • CTPAT and PIP secure and safe operations. Our CTPAT and PIP operations allow customers to take full advantage of the benefits of each program.
  • Door-to-door through trailer service.
  • Complete visibility from origin to destination.
  • Proven carrier network.
  • Northbound and Southbound service.
  • Service in and out of major Mexican and Canadian markets.
  • Trailer-pooling capability.

Jaska acknowledges that there are often challenges in moving cargo in and out of Canada, including finding available capacity and carriers with Free and Secure Trade (FAST) clearances and Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) certifications. “Our Customs Brokerage division can handle all the customs clearances on both sides of the border, and we are confident in saying that we’re experts in transborder freight movement. Specific to LTL, transit and capacity challenges for U.S. to Canada were problematic for shippers previously and have increased with the departure of a couple of carriers from the market.”

As a company that is proudly certified and validated (Tier II) in the U.S. Government’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) and the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) Partners in Protection (PIP) initiatives, we ensure a more secure and expeditious supply chain for our employees and customers. Our cross-border customers are also given peace of mind because they’ll benefit from faster customs clearance processes, less risk of theft because their freight will always remain secure with reliable security, and fewer inspections by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). “In addition to our certifications, our facilities are CBSA Inspection sites and fully bonded,” said Jaska. “This ensures high-level freight security and the ability to move freight in bond across the border if brokers are challenged to border clear freight, which benefits carriers and clients by ensuring freight is not held up at the border.”

Always trying to find ways to improve and provide the best service for our customers, we created the Canada Made Easy (CME) program. CME is designed specifically for each customer and offers solutions that are specific to their products, industry, and unique requirements. Our team has the experience to provide a complete and hassle-free logistics alternative for our customers. “Canada Made Easy is truly an innovative solution for US-to-Canada LTL,” said Jaska. “We pick up freight in major markets and consolidate on set linehaul schedules into our hubs in Vancouver, Mississauga, and Montreal for final-mile delivery. This product offers reduced handling and fast and reliable transit times to cover virtually all of Canada.”

The acquisition of our U.S. Land Transport division has unlocked new capabilities that further strengthen our position as a leader in the transportation industry while fulfilling our goals of expanding the scope of services and driving growth.
