Their Promise: Seventeen Percent Reduction in CO2 Emissions in Six Years
Two giants of the industry, DB Schenker Logistics and Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), have signed a six-year strategic agreement on reducing CO2 emissions from ocean freight. After agreements Schenker has reached with Maersk, Hapag Lloyd and Hamburg Süd, this is the first agreement of its kind with an Asian carrier. Seoul-based HMM will undertake to reduce the CO2 emissions of every container it ships on behalf of DB Schenker Logistics until 2020 by 17% compared to 2014 levels. Taeg Gyu Lee, Chief Maritime Officer of HMM commented:
“Environment is a strategic pillar in our and DB Schenker´s day to day ocean business activities. We are proud that we are supporting DB Schenker Logistics, respectively the DB Group, in their efforts to reduce carbon emissions by more than 30% by 2020 compared to 2006.”
HMM has now become the fourth such partner to sign such an agreement as Schenker views such commitment to the environment as essential in the bid to present a responsible face of the transport industry to the world. Dr Karl-Friedrich Rausch, Management Board Member for Transportation and Logistics at DB Mobility Logistics AG and Chief Sustainability Officer of Deutsche Bahn AG added:
“This is the first agreement between a global logistics services provider and an Asian container shipping company. The agreement is a further milestone because we manage to build mutual committing relationships on sustainability targets with carriers across the globe. The objective of the six-year agreement is to fuel customers’ interest in sustainable ocean freight on the market by bringing aspects of sustainability into business decision-making processes.”
